2 suspects in Waimanalo beating case arraigned

Advertiser Staff

Two of four men indicted recently in connection with the beating of a 51-year-old man March 30 at Waimanalo Beach Park were arraigned yesterday at Circuit Court on charges of first- and second-degree assault.

Manuel Kupahu Jr. and Guy K. Meyers are accused of attacking the man in the park. The indictment by the O'ahu grand jury also charges Kupahu with cruelty to animals.

Robert Kuhio Kupahu, currently in federal custody for unrelated offenses, and Gavin A. H. "Hano" Kalai also are charged in the Sept. 24 indictment with first- and second-degree assault. Bail for each man is $50,000.

The four are accused of beating the man after he tried to stop Manuel Kupahu from strangling and drowning a dog at the park.

A shoving match ensued between Manuel Kupahu and the 51-year-old man.

Kupahu left the scene but returned with Robert Kupahu, Meyers and Kalai. The four men are accused of beating the man, who was treated for eight broken ribs and cuts over both eyes at Castle Medical Center.

The dog was found dead at Kupahu's home.
