If playing the two top soccer teams in the Western Athletic Conference wasn't hard enough, Hawai'i must cope with several key injuries when it hosts SMU tonight at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Sophomore forward Natasha Kai, the reigning WAC Player of the Year, and senior midfielder Mia Moe are both recovering from leg injuries.

Kai sprained her right ankle on Sept. 28 and will be a "game-time decision" for tonight's match, and Moe sprained her left knee on Sept. 7 and is questionable for both matches, according to Hawai'i coach Pinsoom Tenzing.

"We're nursing some injuries, but we got depth in the team and we'll come with everything we got," Tenzing said. "I'm just hoping that will be enough."

Hawai'i (7-3-1 overall, 2-0 WAC) hosts defending WAC champion SMU (9-2, 2-0) tonight at 7. On Sunday, Hawai'i plays UTEP (7-3, 2-0) at 5 p.m. Both matches will be televised live on K5 (Ch. 5).

Hawai'i enters tonight's match against SMU with its best start in the program's 10-year history after 11 matches, but is 0-5-1 all-time against the Mustangs.

"Every WAC game is critical," Tenzing said. "We've never beaten SMU and we're hoping to do that this time (tonight)."

Hawai'i boasts one of the WAC's best scoring attacks, ranking third in goals per game (2.7). Kai is tied for third nationally in goals per match (1.3) and is sixth in points per match (2.8). Senior forward Arlene Devitt is second on the team with six goals.

Defensively, sophomore goalie Mahie Atay has posted three solo shutouts and leads the WAC in goals against average (0.97).

For SMU, first-year head coach John Cossaboon can look to senior Kim Harvey to lead one of the conference's top offenses. Harvey has scored 14 goals in 11 matches this season, including four multiple-goal performances. The Mustangs lead the WAC with 37 goals, and average 3.36 goals per match.

Junior goalkeeper Amanda Clark has four shutouts this season (1.01 goals against average) and has the Mustangs riding a four-match winning streak.

UTEP is led by freshman Christine McCartney who has 10 goals and 21 points in 10 matches. The Miners have won five matches in a row and are second to SMU in goals scored (35) and average 3.5 goals per match.
