Hawai'i's Hattie Somerville and Betsy Purpura won their second U.S. Tennis Association Mother-Daughter National Grasscourt Championship in August.

The tournament was played at Newport Casino Lawn Tennis Club in Newport, R.I.

Hattie Somerville lives in Koloa. Daughter Betsy, a three-time Hawai'i state high school champion, lives in Jersey City, N.J. She is the women's tennis coach at Seton Hall.

In the finals, the Somervilles beat Dora and Patricia Kinghorn, 6-1, 6-3. Hattie and Betsy also earned the tournament sportsmanship award in the senior division.

The Somervilles also won the 2001 national grasscourt championship.

In January, Purpura won the National 35 Indoors with partner Laura Glitz, also from New Jersey.

This summer, Purpura and Glitz defeated former Wimbledon champion Jana Novotna and Jeanine Alexander, 7-5, 6-4, in the final of the national grasscourts. Purpura was third in singles.
