Windward Worship Center |
Our affiliation: Church of God of Prophecy, a Pentecostal Christian organization
Where we are: 45-416 Kamehameha Highway, Kane'ohe.
Our pastor: Gary Langley
Our numbers: About 100 members, 50 of whom attend the weekly worship service Sundays at 10 a.m.
What we believe: As Christians, they take the Bible as the literal word of God, said Anthony Graham, a spokesman for the church.
Their mission statement: "We exist as part of the body of Christ to fulfill our role in the great commission of our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ, through evangelism, discipleship and servanthood."
Our history: The church was started by Pastor Charles Lanter, who arrived in Hawai'i from the Mainland on Oct. 7, 1963, to plant a church. A tiny congregation started meeting at a Kane'ohe school that year.
The church later purchased the lot for $32,000 and the building was ready for its first church service on New Year's Day 1965.
What we're excited about: On Oct. 12, the church launches its "40 days of Purpose" campaign.
The seven-week campaign calls for evangelism and personal spiritual exploration, based on the Biblical theme of 40 days (Noah's 40 days of rain, Moses' 40 days on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments, Goliath's 40 days of challenging that led to David's confrontation with him, Jesus' 40 days in the wilderness).
During the Windward Worship Center's 40-day campaign, the church will host meetings of small home Bible-study groups using the Rick Warren book, "The Purpose Driven Life."
What's special about us: "Our church band (praise and worship team) is mostly made up of teenagers," Graham said. "I might add that the youth of the church serves a great percentage of our church."
The church also uses drama and video elements, on occasion.
