Kailua capitalizes on McKinley miscues for victory

Kailua capitalized on turnovers and McKinley's shoddy special teams play to beat the Tigers, 26-21, last night in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association East football game at Aloha Stadium.

The Surfriders (5-1 overall, 4-1 OIA East), ranked fifth in The Advertiser Top 10, inched closer to securing one of the top four slots in the division for the OIA tournament.

The Tigers (3-3, 2-3), who made it to the state semifinals last year, will not only need to win the rest of their games, but hope the other contenders lose. There are two weeks left in the regular season.

"It's hard," McKinley quarterback Abel Werner said. "We have to hope for a lot of things. Just win-out now, hopefully, that things stay in our hands. But it's tough."

Kailua running back Damien Torres rushed for 191 yards on 28 carries, including TD runs of 38 and 11 yards.

"It felt great, but I could've done better," Torres said.

Kailua's Kekoa Sua, who leads the East with 675 yards rushing, did not play because of a foot injury and is week-to-week.

Torres' 38-yard TD came after Surfriders' defensive back Derek Mailau intercepted Werner's pass on the first play from scrimmage of the second half and returned it 10 yards to the McKinley 43.

A fumble in the fourth quarter set up Michael Sakaba's 36-yard field goal.

But poor special teams play by McKinley aided Kailua. Just before the half, McKinley got off a 6-yard punt to the McKinley 49. Three pass plays from Kelroy Kohatsu to Dylan Linkner set up Sakaba's 40-yard field goal with no time showing on the clock to give Kailua a 10-7 lead at the half.

After Torres' 38-yard TD, McKinley pulled back with a 16-yard scoring pass from Werner to Iakopo Taumua with 6:03 left in the third quarter to make it 16-14.

But a shallow kickoff to Hana Kekauoha was returned 21 yards to the Kailua 48, where the Surfriders used six plays before Torres scored on an 11-yard run to make it 23-14.

McKinley closed to 26-21 on a 1-yard TD pass from Werner to Michael Vasconcellos with 1:19 left. But McKinley failed on an ensuing onside kick and Kailua ran out the clock to end the game.

"I'll take the blame for that," McKinley first-year coach William Moeava said about the special teams play. "We gotta get the kids prepared."

Kailua coach Darren Johnson said the Surfriders capitalizing on the special teams mistakes by McKinley was big.

"It was the turning point," he said. "We played better special teams, except for that blocked punt."

Another key was Kailua's ability to contain Werner to 115 yards passing, even if it meant allowing him to rush for 77 yards.

"If he gets tired (from running), he isn't going to throw the ball well," Johnson said.

Meanwhile, Kailua's issues were penalties. It was called 19 times for 202 yards.

"I don't understand it," Johnson said. "We get the most penalties in this stadium. We'll work on it and get better. We have to show the film. Some kids are going to pay the price for it because we pay the price for the penalties."
