Sailor killed in accident on H-2

A motorcyclist was killed yesterday afternoon in a collision on the northbound lanes of H-2. Police said the motorcyclist and a truck collided on the highway near Ka Uka Boulevard at about 4:30 p.m. Military officials said the victim was a sailor attached to Marine Air Group 24 at Marine Corps Base Hawai'i. He was not identified. Traffic was tied up for hours on H-2 and slowed on H-1 as officers investigated the accident.

Kapolei growth to be discussed

A community meeting to discuss traffic, school and road problems will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Makakilo Recreation Center.

Sponsored by the Makakilo Community Association, the meeting will include a discussion of traffic congestion in Kapolei, crowded schools and aging roads. According to the association, 4,000 new homes are planned in the area by the end of next year and the infrastructure cannot support the increase in cars and people.

For more information, call meeting facilitator Kioni Dudley at 672-8888 or association president Roy Wickramaratna at 672-8194.

DOE releases enrollment data

Public-school enrollment in Hawai'i declined this school year to 182,434 students — 364 fewer than last school year.

The number of special-education students declined by 339 students to 20,469, or 11.2 percent of total enrollment, the Department of Education said Thursday.

Charter-school enrollment climbed by 34 percent to 4,502 students. Officials attributed the increase primarily to the conversion of Waimea Middle School and the rapid growth of Myron Thompson Academy, an online "virtual" charter school that provides instruction through the Internet.

The Leeward O'ahu District remained the DOE's largest administrative area, growing by 1.5 percent to 38,827 students.

Walkway at aquarium closed

The walkway along the shoreline side of the Waikiki Aquarium will be closed for several months as repairs are made to an area undermined by high southerly surf.

People walking through the area are advised to avoid the construction site and detour around safety barriers.

HaRon Engineering is working to fix the erosion of sand under the walkway.
