Kapolei remains unbeaten, 42-12

The Kapolei High School football team preserved next week's O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Conference showdown of unbeatens last night by roaring past Kalaheo, 42-12, at Kailua Stadium.

The Hurricanes, tied with Baldwin for the No. 7 spot in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of media and coaches, improved to 5-0 in the OIA and 6-0 overall with the victory. They face 'Aiea (5-0, 5-1) on Friday.

Kalaheo (3-2, 3-3) had hoped to make the White regular season a three-team race with an upset last night and intercepted passes on Kapolei's first three possessions. But the Hurricanes' Roland Mason made an interception of his own with 47 seconds remaining in the first quarter and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown to help Kapolei take a 7-0 lead.

Mason then scored on a 5-yard run with 8:20 left in the half to make it 14-0, and John Dela Rama added a 7-yard TD run four minutes later to help put the Hurricanes up, 21-0. Jon Medeiros' 32-yard touchdown pass to Charles Recamara with 2:33 remaining gave Kapolei a 28-0 halftime lead.

The Hurricanes' defense limited the Mustangs to 40 yards in the first two quarters and did not allow them past the 28-yard line.

"(Mason's) interception provided a spark, but we started slow and were very uneven on offense," Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez said. "Our defense was iron-clad, and that gave us a chance to hang in there. And I guess when it had to, our offense did step up and make the plays."

Kalaheo got a 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback David Pershin to Nate Richards to make it 28-6 midway through the third quarter, and closed it to 28-12 on a 39-yard double-pass TD from Pershin to Richards to Sean Tobera with 5:43 left in the game.

But the Hurricanes answered with Medeiros' 29-yard touchdown pass to Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada.
