Defense contributed in more ways than the obvious for Kamehameha in its 28-3 win against Iolani in Interscholastic League of Honolulu football last night.

The interdivisional game was played before 4,407 at Aloha Stadium.

The Division I Warriors' defense returned a fumble for a touchdown and saw one of its four interceptions against Iolani recycled into a touchdown. But the defense also loaned a player to the offense in safety Travis Beyer.

Beyer started the first defensive series before taking control of the offense at running back by rushing for 183 yards on 24 carries, including two touchdowns to help keep Kamehameha, the top-ranked team in The Advertiser Top 10, undefeated at 3-0 in the ILH and 5-0 overall.

Kamehameha's defense contained Iolani to five first downs and 98 yards.

"Our defense did a heck of a job," Kamehameha coach Kanani Souza said. "And that's a pretty sporty outfit (the Raiders) got. They spread you out a lot and give you a lot of problems."

The Division II Raiders (2-1, 4-3) were still without the services of last year's 1,000-yard rusher in running back Raynold Stowers, who is nursing a pinched nerve in his shoulder.

"That's 60 percent of my offense right there," said Iolani coach Wendell Look, referring to Stowers. "Yeah, he would've made a difference."

Beyer broke the scoreless deadlock with a 42-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. He put the lid on the Warriors' scoring with a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter.

"He's been playing free safety for us in some of the things we do," Souza said. "Right now, he's also the best free safety (we have). We just don't have enough of them."

The Raiders' only score came in the second quarter. The Warriors were set to punt from the 38 when Kepa Gaison fumbled the snap, netting a 14-yard loss to the Warriors' 24. The Raiders lost a yard in the series before a 41-yard field goal by Nicholas Wong closed the Warriors' lead to 7-3 with 9:18 left in the half.

Later in the half, the Raiders lost a fumble on first down from their 23. Defensive back Gabriel Spencer returned the loose ball 18 yards for a touchdown. Gaison's PAT gave the Warriors a 14-2 lead at the half.

On the Raiders' first series on the second half, defensive back Travis Uale intercepted a Kiran Kepoo pass at the Iolani 40. The 13-play drive ended with quarterback Pono Kam hitting Waika Spencer with an 11-yard TD pass that made it 21-3.
