• After a national search, local education veteran LYNN FALLIN has been named the first executive director of Ho'okako'o Corp., a new nonprofit educational organization formed last year, in part, in response to legislation allowing nonprofit foundations to help run conversion charter schools. Fallin, recently honored by the National Governor's Association as one of 12 national leaders in early childhood education, previously served as director of the Governor's Office of Children and Youth. The 14-year public and private education veteran has also served as deputy director of the state Department of Human Services, and executive director of the Oregon Commission on Children and Families. The nonprofit Ho'okako'o advocacy works to provide not only conversion charter school assistance, but exemplary early childhood development programs and other innovative educational services.

DEBRA TAKAHASHI, partner and manager of the former Kensei Restaurant, has been named marketing assistant for the new Kahala Nui retirement community, expected for completion next to Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Kahala, in 2004. Takahashi was, most recently, executive assistant and office manager for Genesys, an audio, video, multimedia and global conferencing company.

RICHARD M. (RIK) PAPA has been hired as project engineer for the award-winning, 600-unit Peninsula at Hawai'i Kai housing development. Stanford Carr Development has won three Golden Nugget Awards of Merit from the building industry for the Lunalilo Home Road development of homes, townhomes and condominiums. Papa most recently worked at Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co. on a Starwood Vacation Ownership time-share construction project, and before that, for J.J. DeLuca Co., a private construction management company in Pennsylvania.

• Bank of Hawaii has promoted three senior vice presidents to executive vice presidents:

  • WILLIAM (BILL) BARTON, will continue his responsibilities as chief investment officer, with added responsibility as head of the recently formed Investment Strategy Committee. The committee is responsible for economic forecasts, with emphasis on the U.S. economic outlook, asset allocation and industry analysis. Barton came to Bank of Hawaii with the bank's acquisition of Hawaiian Trust Co. He is a former vice president at at Detroit bank.
  • WILLIAM P. HENRY JR. continues duties as manager of the Investment Products Division, which is responsible for development and management of the bank's mutual funds and collective funds, marketed through the Investment Services Group. He also serves as president of Pacific Capital funds.
  • HOWARD M. HODEL, who joined the bank in January of this year to head the risk management and analytics function for the Investment Services Group, will now serve as manager of the Asset Management Group.

JON T. IWAOKA, former lighting director and head technician for the Society of Seven Entertainment Group, and sound engineer for some of Hawai'i's top entertainers, has been named production supervisor for Hawaiian Host Inc., Hawai'i's originator of chocolate-covered macadamia nuts.

• Board of directors named to new three-year terms for Hawaii Theatre Center include community volunteer CAROL CAMPBELL; JEFF CASE, executive vice president, AON Risk Services of Hawaii; KAREN HUFFMAN, president, QSR-Pacific Inc.; FRANKLIN TOKIOKA, chairman, Island Holdings Inc. and National Mortgage and Finance Co. Ltd.; DAVID STRINGER, David Stringer Architects; dentist, DR. LAWRENCE TSEU, and JON WHITTINGTON, vice president, Hawai'i area manager/underwriter, Countrywide Home Loans.

The new board officers include chairman ROBERT MIDKIFF; vice chairpersons MARY WEYAND, community volunteer; MICHAEL PFEFFER, of Persis Corp.; TRISH O'NEILL, community volunteer; and AL TOMONARI, Neiman Marcus; secretary GAYE GLASER, community volunteer; and treasurer PAUL SCHRAFF, attorney.

PITCHARANA CHAICHARN has been named to the newly created position of volunteer coordinator at Seagull Schools. She will work to integrate volunteer student and community members into educational programs at the four school campuses statewide. She was most recently volunteer coordinator for AmeriCorps*VISTA at Ka'ala Elementary School, where she recruited and trained community members as reading tutors. Seagull campuses on O'ahu and the Big Island provide childcare and preschool services.
