An 83-year-old Kaimuki man was hit by a car and killed yesterday morning as he crossed Harding Avenue near the Market City Foodland Super Market.

Authorities identified the man as Thomas Hashimoto, of Wai'alae Avenue.

Hashimoto was 60 feet outside of the crosswalk when he was hit by a 1990 Honda Accord, police said.

The driver, a 40-year-old 'Ewa Beach woman, was driving east from King Street onto Harding Avenue at 7:27 a.m. when the accident occurred, police said.

Hashimoto was taken to The Queen's Medical Center with head injuries. He was pronounced dead at 9 a.m.

Traffic investigators said the rising morning sun and the pedestrian not being in a marked crosswalk were probable factors in the accident and that alcohol and speed were not.

Also yesterday, officials identified a sailor who was killed in a motorcycle accident on the H-2 Freeway near Ka Uka Boulevard Saturday afternoon.

Brian Hallback, 30, lived in Kailua and was a member of Marine Air Group 24 at Marine Corps Base Hawai'i.

On Maui, a 48-year-old bicyclist suffered life-threatening injuries Saturday night when he was struck from behind by a vehicle. The man was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition. The crash occurred at 6:30 p.m. in Lahaina, 276 feet north of Front Street on Honoapi'ilani Highway.

Maui police were investigating the possibility that speed, drugs and alcohol may have been involved.
