Michel, Markowicz win Niketown 5K

Advertiser Staff

Siul Michel, Kristin Markowicz and Ma'ema'e Elementary School were the big winners at yesterday's Niketown 5K and Kids Run in Waikiki.

Michel, 23, was the first male finisher in 15 minutes, 48 seconds; Markowicz, 33, had the fastest time among females in 17:57; and Ma'ema'e had the most participants — more than 500 — for the fourth straight year.

The event raised more than $79,000 for O'ahu's public and private schools and drew 5,000 participants, according to a press release. Entry fees will be donated to schools in support of athletic programs and to help refurbish play equipment.

"We were overwhelmed by the number of participants," said Keala Peters, marketing and events manager for Niketown Honolulu.

Ma'ema'e will receive approximately $6,500.

Niketown will also donate 5 percent of this weekend's sales in the form of shoes and sports equipment to Hawai'i's Adopt-A-Teacher program.
