THE LEFT LANE
Ribbon crafting

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Got family coming in from the Mainland? Nieces and nephews graduating next year? Auntie turning 80? We have two words for you: ribbon lei. And Bess Press has a new book for you: "Making Ribbon Leis 2: More Handmade Gifts of Aloha" (spiral-bound paper, $9.95) by Coryn Tanaka and May Masaki, a mother-daughter team, owners of U & Me Crafts Inc.

This book features such unusual designs as 'ohai ali'i, kika (the cigar flower), 'ola'a beauty and 'akulikuli — special-kine lei. There's also a "recipe" for an easy bow you can personalize.

Roll out the barrel

The clamor of cow bells and flagons of beer at the Ala Moana Hotel means it's polka-party time at the 33rd annual Oktoberfest.

The cultural celebration in the Hibiscus Ballroom includes boisterous sing-alongs, German beers and schnapps. Not to mention hearty Bavarian dishes, sauerkraut and Black Forest layer cake.

Oktoberfest runs 6 to 11 p.m. today through Thursday, 6 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday, and 5 to 11 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5 today through Thursday and Sunday, $8 on Friday and Saturday. Details: 955-4811.

Chipping in to charity

While the Lakers are in town, Access VIP Hawaii is teaming up with the team and the fans for charity.

The Lakers and Health Awareness Hawaii will hold a fund-raiser from 8:30 to midnight Thursday at the Meritage restaurant at Restaurant Row to raise money for two causes — fighting breast cancer and brain injuries.

The event includes pupu, door prizes and a jazz band. Proceeds from the $20 donations at the door will go help Health Awareness Hawaii provide services.
