UH researcher receives honor

The Hawaii Conservation Conference has presented its 2003 distinguished service award to University of Hawai'i researcher Kenneth Y. Kaneshiro, a founder of the Hawai'i Evolutionary Biology Project who has developed an international reputation for his genetic work with Hawaiian vinegar flies, or drosophila.

Kaneshiro also helped start the UH graduate program in ecology, evolution and conservation biology, as well as the Hawai'i Conservation Alliance and the university's Center for Conservation, Research and Training.


UH cites 15 for excellence

Fifteen University of Hawai'i professors have been awarded the 2003 Regents Medal for Excellence in Teaching. They are:

  • David Alethea, professor of philosophy at the UH-West O'ahu,
  • Mary Alexander, associate professor of English at Kaua'i Community College.
  • Krystyna Aune, associate professor in the UH Department of Speech.
  • Rick Caufield, assistant professor in the UH-Manoa Department of Family and Consumer Sciences.
  • Linus Chao, professor of art at Hawai'i Community College.
  • Leticia Colmenares, an instructor of chemistry at Windward Community College.
  • John Conner, professor of English literature at Leeward Community College.
  • Kathy Ferguson, professor in the UH-Manoa Women's Studies Program and the Department of Political Science.
  • Jonathan Goldberg-Hiller, associate professor in the UH-Manoa Department of Political Science.
  • Kakkala "Gopal" Gopalakrishnanm, professor of oceanography at Honolulu Community College.
  • David Hammes, professor of economics at UH-Hilo.
  • Nelda Quensell, associate professor of botany at Kapi'olani Community College.
  • Wayne Shiroma, associate professor of the UH-Manoa Department of Electrical Engineering.
  • Lee Stein, instructor of human services at Maui Community College.
  • Terence Wesley-Smith, associate professor at the UH-Manoa Center for Pacific Islands Studies.


Two get scholarships to study in Japan

University of Hawai'i-Manoa students John A. Schultz and John M. Lau have been awarded Monbukagakusho scholarships from the Japanese Ministry of Education, Science, Sports & Technology.

Schultz will study Japanese Buddhism under professor Eiki Hishino at Taisho University. Lau will study Japanese literature under assistant professor Yosuke Momiyama at Nagoya University.


Six scholars receive awards

The Hawaii Police Athletic Federation has awarded scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,500 to six local students.

Recipients are Keani Alapa, Marissa Nishimura and Bronson Sismar of UH-Manoa; Samanta Alapa of Dana College; Brandi Barefoot of Dixie State College; and Kurt Nakashima of California Polytechnic.


Correction: David Alethea, a professor of philosophy at the University of Hawai'i-West O'ahu, has been awarded the 2003 Regents Medal for Excellence in Teaching. His name was omitted from a list of medal winners in a previous version of this column.
