Former pitcher to tee off with seniors

Rick Rhoden, who pitched 16 seasons in the major leagues, received a sponsor's exemption to participate in this week's PGA Champions Tour Turtle Bay Championship.

Rhoden pitched most of his years with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Pittsburgh Pirates. He pitched in the World Series for the Dodgers, who lost to the Reggie Jackson-led New York Yankees in 1977. He earned 151 career victories.

Rhoden joins Jan Stephenson, who also received a sponsor's exemption. Stephenson, who won 16 times on the LPGA Tour, will become the first woman pro to play in a men's Champions Tour event.

The $1.5 million Turtle Bay Championship will be held Friday through Sunday, and includes Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Chi Chi Rodriguez and Isao Aoki. The winner receives $225,000.

UH's Stevens leads: University of Hawai'i freshman Geoffrey Stevens shot a 4-under 68 to finish yesterday's first round in a four-way tie for first at the Ernest Lied Wolf Pack Classic at the Wolf Run Golf Course in Reno, Nev.

The Warrior golf squad is in a three-way tie for eighth place with a 289.

New Mexico State has the overall team lead with a 282.

UH's Odelius second: Rainbow Wahine Sara Odelius shot a 1-under 71 and is in second place after yesterday's first round of the Price's Give Em Five Tournament at the New Mexico State University Golf Course.

She is one stroke behind Florida State's Alison Curdt.

Hawai'i is in eighth place with a 307. Florida State and Oklahoma are tied for the lead at 293.

VOLLEYBALL

HPU sweeps: Nadica Karleusa had 17 kills and hit .640 as Hawai'i Pacific beat Montana State-Billings, 30-20, 30-20, 30-23, in a Pacific West Conference match last night at the Neal Blaisdell Center.

HPU improved to 11-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference; Billings dropped to 3-13, 0-4.

Chaminade sweeps, too: Kahala Kabalis had 14 kills, and Patti Hardimon and Valasi Sepulona each added 13 as Chaminade beat Western New Mexico, 30-23, 30-21, 32-30, in a PacWest match last night at McCabe Gym.

Chaminade improved to 8-4 and 3-0, while Western New Mexico fell to 8-12, 0-5.

SOCCER

Two Rainbows honored: University of Hawai'i forward Natasha Kai and goalkeeper Erin Chow were named Western Athletic Conference women's soccer offensive and defensive Players of the Week.

Kai, a sophomore from Kahuku High, compiled eight points on three goals and two assists in matches against SMU and UTEP.

Chow, a junior from Moanalua High, allowed no goals in more than 107 minutes against SMU and UTEP.

WATER POLO

BYUH wins pair: The Brigham Young University-Hawai'i men's water polo team beat No. 19 Cal Baptist, 8-6, and Chapman (Calif.), 13-9, yesterday at Riverside, Calif.

The Seasiders improved to 7-3 overall and will continue their eight-game road trip with a match against UC-San Diego today.
