Justin Flores was killed Monday morning when his bicycle veered onto the road.
WAIMANALO — A roadside memorial with balloons and a teddy bear marks the spot where Justin Liko Flores, 13, was struck and killed by an automobile Monday morning as he was out bicycle riding with a friend.

Police are still looking for the friend, hoping to find out what happened near Waimanalo Elementary & Intermediate School at 8:30 that morning as the boys rode in the Kailua-bound direction on the mauka raised sidewalk.

Some witnesses said the friend accidentally pushed Flores into the street.

Police said the friend has called them but would not leave a name or number where he could be reached.

Flores, who lived with his grandparents in Waimanalo, was hit when he veered into Kalaniana'ole Highway about 200 feet from Mo'ole Street.

Witnesses told police the two boys were playing and slapping each other as they rode along.

Somehow Justin Flores ended up in the road and a white Taurus station wagon driven by a 21-year-old Waimanalo man struck him.

Flores' bicycle hit the car and he landed on it, smashing the passenger-side windshield and falling to the road. In the process he suffered a fractured skull and brain injuries, according to the medical examiner's office.
