THE LEFT LANE
Party under the light of the silvery moon

Advertiser Staff and News Services

There's nothing like a little food, a little sake and a big harvest moon to inspire the poetic soul. Throw in a little shakuhachi music, some dancing and a traditional tea ceremony and you have more than a party poetic, you have Tsukimi no Kai.

This moon-watching party takes place 6 p.m. Friday at the 'Ohi'a Building at Kapi'olani Community College. The cost is $30.

Participants are invited to partake in a deluxe tsukimi ryori (moon dinner) prepared by KCC's Culinary Institute of the Pacific, and compose their own haiku on traditional shikishi cards. Poems may be read to the audience, and a calligrapher will be on hand to transcribe the haiku into Japanese.

To purchase tickets, call the United Japanese Society of Hawai'i at 941-5889.

Mailing deadlines trigger holiday mode

It's getting earlier and earlier.

The first "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas" item appeared in the September newsletter for Restaurant Row: An item on Kat Reece of Honolulu Gift Basket Co. says it's not too early to start thinking about the holidays "in time to make the early mailing deadlines."

Reminds us of those folks whose Christmas cards arrive in the mailbox the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Should the Grim Reaper cast a cold shadow on your doorstep one day soon, tell him you can't possibly shed your mortal coil until you've traveled the backwaters of India's Kerala state and searched for a kindred spirit at the Imilchil Betrothal Festival in Morocco.

In fact, you might want to tell ol' Calcium Face to drop the cloak and take a load off because it'll be a while before you work your way through Patricia Schultz's "1,000 Places to See Before You Die." (Workman, $18.95). This exhaustive tome details international destinations, including the lavish halls of Chatsworth House in England and the somewhat less-posh Skeleton Coast of Namibia.

Workshops to teach self-empowerment

Are you juggling too many glass balls? Have a hard time saying "no"? Now there's help. Social psychologist Kalei Inn is offering a series of workshops to help people empower themselves and better balance career and family. Using yoga relaxation poses, action plans, priority- and boundary-setting and small-group discussions, Inn will help attendees approach success through healthful living.

The sessions will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, Oct. 18 to Nov. 1 at Kapi'olani Community College; and 5 to 8 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 20 to Nov. 3 at the Richards Street YWCA. Cost is $225. Information: 734-9256 for KCC classes, 538-7061 for YWCA classes.
