Charles Hanawahine, former coin diver, dead at 69

Charles Hanawahine Sr., once a member of the coin diving club of Kaka'ako, a group of accomplished young divers who retrieved coins tourists threw into Honolulu Harbor from the decks of the Lurline, Leilani and Matsonia cruise ships, died Sept. 25.

A retired Honolulu wastewater management employee, he was 69.

Hanawahine is survived by his wife, Edwina Marie Cummings Hanawahine; sons Charles P. Jr. and Albert "Bubu" Bryan; daughters Cheryl-Ann Babb and Moana Hanawahine-Yamamoto; 12 grandchildren, two step grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two step great-grandchildren; sisters Nancy Loa, Frances Hanawahine, Nora Stant, Jennifer Hanawahine, Alice Drummondo, Agnes Borges and Emily Gonsalves and brother, Roy Hanawahine.

Services are today from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Waimanalo Assembly of God Church.

Hanawahine's ashes will be scattered Saturday at 9 a.m. at Kaiona Beach Park in Waimanalo. Casual attire.
