Jan Stephenson, Michelle Wie and the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine golf team will take part in Golf Academy Live "A Celebration of Women in Golf" on Oct. 19.
The free clinic will be from 10 a.m. to noon at Ko Olina Golf Club.
Stephenson, who has won 16 times on the LPGA Tour, will offer perspectives and insights on women in golf. She will also be presenting her new line of golf attire.
Wie, a Punahou School freshman, became the youngest USGA Women's Amateur Public Links champion this summer. She will compete that weekend in the LPGA CJ Nine Bridges Classic in Korea and will return for the clinic, according to her father, BJ.
She will help with the clinic along with the Rainbow Wahine and their coach, Hawai'i Golf Hall of Fame member Marga Stubblefield.
Along with golf, there will be a cooking demonstration by executive chef Jackie Lau of Roy's at Ko Olina, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Roy's is expected to open at the Ko Olina Golf Club in January. Contact Ko Olina at 676-5300.
College workshop set
The Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association is sponsoring a college workshop Nov. 2 at the University of Hawai'i Athletic Complex (Room 241). It runs from 10 a.m. to noon.
The panel of college golf coaches and players will speak on topics of interest to all college students, especially those interested in athletics.
Punahou teacher and sports television analyst Chris McLachlin will be the workshop facilitator. Parent representatives will also contribute information and answer questions.
Subjects will include how to get a head start in preparing for college admissions and athletic recruitment, obtaining scholarships and financial aid, venues to showcase juniors for college recruitment, preparing resumes, NCAA guidelines and eligibility, college searches and life as a college athlete.
The workshop is free for HSJGA members and their families, and $5 for non-members. Call 532-0559 or go to HSJGA.org to obtain a registration form. Registration deadline is Oct. 24.
Course owners organize
A new chapter of the National Golf Course Owners Association was recently formed in Hawai'i. Coral Creek's Ron Huffman was elected president of the Board of Directors.
Other board members are Ben Neeley (Waikele), Greg Nichols (Ko Olina), Andrew Feldman (Oahu Country Club), Ted McAneeley (Mauna Kea), Lois Parker (Pearl Country Club) and Gary Planos (Kapalua).
The chapter plans to focus on tax assessments for courses, increasing the game's presence in Hawai'i tourism, finding equitable solutions for water rights and allocations, and education for improving operations and profitability.
