No. 1 Kennelly wipes out in French meet

Advertiser Staff

Kaua'i's Keala Kennelly was eliminated in the third round of the Roxy Pro France yesterday.

The third round of the women's surfing contest was held in 3- to 5-foot waves at Hossegor, France.

Kennelly entered the contest ranked No. 1 on the women's World Championship Tour. The chase for her first world title will come down to the final contest of the season — the Billabong Pro at Honolua Bay, Maui, in December.

"I didn't want it to go down to Hawai'i," Kennelly said. "I wanted to be relaxed by then and celebrating already, but I've got some more work to do I guess."

Kennelly was eliminated by French wildcard entry Emanuelle Joly, 16.17-13.5.

Megan Abubo of Waialua defeated Brazil's Jacqueline Silva, 13.66-11.27, to advance to the quarterfinals. Rochelle Ballard of Kaua'i was eliminated by Lynette Mackenzie of Australia, 13.16-10.0.
