Latest bank robbery is fourth this month

First Hawaiian Bank’s Kapahulu branch was robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash about 11:30 a.m. today by a man who used a note demanding money.

Today’s robbery was the fourth this month on O‘ahu and fifth since Sept. 26.

There have been 31 bank robberies on O‘ahu this year.

The American Savings Bank branch at 1450 Ala Moana Blvd. was held up yesterday at 5 p.m. when a man passed a note demanding money to a teller. The note indicated the man had a gun but no weapon was seen. The man fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

“This is a new player,” said Lt. Ray Quon, supervisor of Honolulu Police Department robbery investigations, of yesterday’s suspect.

Police, however, think the person in two other robberies this month — Wednesday at Bank of Hawaii’s Mapunapuna branch and last Friday at First Hawaiian Bank’s branch at 2250 N. King St. — may be the same man.

An increase in bank robberies is typical for this time of year, officials say.
