Music under the moon

Aston's popular Full Moon Concert series sets tonight with the last concert of the year, 6:30-9 p.m. at the Kapi'olani Park bandstand. The performers include the Hawaiian and reggae band Ka'ala Boys, right, and falsetto songbird Raiatea Helm. Tonight's headliner is Na Hoku Hanohano award winners and longtime favorite The Brothers Cazimero. It's free. 931-1435.


For the love of orchids

Delight in the essence of everything orchid during the Honolulu Orchid Society's 64th annual show and plant sale, "Mystique of Orchids," which includes orchid culture lectures, presentations by other plant-related organizations, cultural demonstrations and judged orchid displays. The event is the primary fund-raiser for the group.

Showtimes are 9 a.m.-8 p.m. today and Saturday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday at the Blaisdell Exhibition Center. Admission is free. 488-3705, 542-9464.


For art's sake

Celebrate the arts at 7 p.m. Saturday during the Hawai'i Alliance of Arts Education's Alliance Awards 2003 at the Hawai'i Theatre. The Makaha Sons — Moon Kauakahi, John Koko and Jerome Koko — headline. Other performers include Jake Shimabukuro, above, Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom, the Hawai'i Youth Symphony String Quartet and Hawai'i Youth Opera Chorus. Elizabeth Lindsey Buyers hosts.

This year's Alfred Preis Award goes to Robert R. Midkiff, president and director of the Atherton Family Foundation. Arts Excellence Awards will be presented to Kula Elementary School on Maui, Hanalei School on Kaua'i, Waiahole Elementary School, Waiau Elementary School, Noelani Elementary School and Hanahau'oli School.

Yes, give us all that stuff!

It's time once again for the annual Food and New Products Show, now in its 39th year. On tap: recreational items, food samples, new products such as DVD home theater systems, bagless lightweight vacuums and reach-easy handheld massagers. See who lasts longest during the Panasonic Couch Potato Survivor Challenge or check out some cooking skills during the American Express Lava Rock Chef Challenge. The food show will be featured in the Blaisdell Arena; the new products can be found in the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.

A musical fund-raiser

The 7th annual Hawai'i Fire Fighters benefit concert, a fund-raiser for the "School Tools" program, begins at 8 p.m. today in the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel's Hawaii Ballroom. Headliner Frankie Moreno, left, and his band bring a smooth blend of blues, soul, funk and country-rock fresh from Las Vegas. Island favorite Kapena performs contemporary Hawaiian tunes and funnyman Andy Bumatai brings in the laughs. Tickets are $25. 949-9673.

After the O'ahu gig, the concert travels to the Neighbor Islands. Show times are 5 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Maui Arts & Cultural Center's Castle Theatre; 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Kaua'i War Memorial Auditorium; and 7 p.m. Nov. 7 (without Moreno and his band) at the King Kamehameha Hotel Ballroom on the Big Island.


Cellist in concert with orchestra

Celebrated cellist Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi joins the Honolulu Symphony for the latest installment of the Halekulani MasterWorks series concerts. Samuel Wong conducts.

Tsutsumi, who received the Suntory Award and Japanese National Academy Arts Prize, is hailed as one of today's foremost soloists. He made his debut at age 12 with the Tokyo Philharmonic and has played in Carnegie Hall, London and Paris. The program includes works by Strauss, Bruch and Shostakovich, plus the much-anticipated "Variations on a Rococo Theme" by Tchaikovsky.

Songbird Batalla in three concerts

Dubbed a "sultry chanteuse" by Billboard magazine, songstress Perla Batalla returns to Honolulu for a series of two concerts. Batalla sings in both English and Spanish, creating a heavenly blend of blues, gospel, folk and contemporary styles. David Batteau accompanies on guitar, with Rico Belled on bass and piano and Claud Mann on percussion.

Batalla, who was last here in July 2000, performs at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa Orvis Auditorium. Tickets are $20 general and $15 for military, students, seniors and UH faculty and staff. 956-6878.

Batalla also performs at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Brigham Young University-Hawai'i's McKay Auditorium. Tickets are $7 general, $6 military and seniors, $5 BYUH faculty and staff, $2 children ages 5-17 and 50 cents for BYUH students. 293-3577.

What's old is new again

For one day only, you can immerse yourself in old Hawai'i during the Vintage Collectibles and Hawaiiana Show. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, the Blaisdell Center Hawaii Suites will be filled with pre-1980s collectibles, antiques and Hawaiiana for show and sale. About 90 tables of vendors from Hawai'i and the Mainland will offer goodies such as aloha shirts, bottles, china, furniture, jewelry, koa, tikis and more.

Admission is $3.50 general and $2 for children ages 7-11. Pay $15 for early entry at 10 a.m. 941-9754.


Never too old to sing

Are you ready to rock? Are you ready to rock with septuagenarians who bring a special joy to anthems such as "I Will Survive," "Satisfaction" and "Purple Haze"? The Young @ Heart Chorus, 35 seniors from Northampton, Mass., its members averaging in age at 77, will fill the Hawai'i Theatre with its special flair in two concerts: 7:30 p.m. Thursday and 8 p.m. Oct. 17.
