Advertiser Staff and News Services

Do you love Clay? Hawai'i fans of Clay Aiken, the almost-winner of the second "American Idol" talent search earlier this year, will participate in a national rally of support overnight Monday in the hours leading up to the release of Aiken's debut CD, "Measure of a Man," in Tuesday's first early-morning minutes.

Aiken admirers will meet at 9 p.m. Monday at Dave and Buster's at the Ward Entertainment Center, where Aiken videos will be shown, leading up to a performance on the "Tonight" show with Jay Leno that evening. Then fans will head to Tower Records at 611 Ke'eaumoku St. to be in line for the 12:01 a.m. Tuesday launch of his disc.

Smoke alarms need a little attention

If you haven't heard a peep out of that white box mounted on your kitchen ceiling for a while, then this is for you: The National Fire Prevention Association found that in 30 percent of reported fires in homes equipped with smoke alarms, the devices did not work.

Does yours? Fire Prevention Week, through tomorrow, would be an appropriate time to check.

Experts suggest residents test their smoke alarms at least once a month and clean the units in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

It's also important to replace smoke alarm batteries once a year, replace smoke alarms every 10 years, and make sure everyone in the household is familiar with the alarm signal and knows how to react immediately.
