Architecture group picks Harris for board

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris has been appointed to serve on the American Institute of Architect's national board of directors.

Harris will be one of only two "public directors," or nonarchitects, serving on the board, which has about 40 members. The board's mission is to set public policies that guide the nation's architects.

The mayor was appointed because of his "unfailing commitment to design excellence in public architecture and his leadership in the areas of sustainability and livable communities," said John Fullmer, president of AIA Honolulu. "The mayor has constantly challenged the city's consulting architects and engineers to pursue excellence in their design efforts."

Harris said in nine years as mayor, "we have focused ... on building a city that is a sustainable city, a city that focuses on urban design, that recognizes that good design makes for high quality of life for the people that live there and the people that visit."

Harris will take his AIA board post in December. The board meets four times a year for three to four days at a time.
