Cubs' Baker at baseball camp

The Chicago Cubs' Dusty Baker, a three-time National League Manager of the Year who has guided the Cubs into a bid for their first pennant since 1945, will be back to lead the fifth annual Hawai'i Winter Baseball Camp next month.

The clinics, which will teach fundamentals and techniques, will be for youngsters 8 to 12 years old and 13 to 18 and has expanded to two weekends. They are set for Nov. 22 to 23 and Nov. 29 to 30 at the University of Hawai'i's Les Murakami Stadium and Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The $100 fee includes lunch.

Joining Baker will be four members of his coaching staff — Wendell Kim, Sonny Jackson, Larry Rothschild and Gary Matthews — as well as former Hawai'i Islanders infielder Ron Wotus and Lenn Sakata, a former Kalani High School standout who played 11 seasons in the major leagues, including with the 1983 World Series champion Baltimore Orioles.

Also, a coaches clinic led by Wotus — who was Baker's bench coach with the San Francisco Giants — and an umpires clinic by Jim Evans, a former American League official who operates the Academy of Professional Umpiring based in Florida, is Nov. 28 to 30.

Applications are available at Long John Silver's/A&W restaurant in the Moanalua Shopping Center or at McCully Bicycle and Sporting Goods. For information, call 973-7247.
