Kahuku pounds Castle, 47-15, stays undefeated in OIA Red East

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

KAHUKU — The Kahuku High School football team put on perhaps its best performance in two years last night, blowing past visiting Castle 47-15 at Carlton E. Weimer Athletic Complex.

The Red Raiders, ranked No. 2 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, rolled up 588 yards of offense in improving to 7-0 overall and 6-0 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Red Conference Eastern Division.

Castle, ranked No. 4 and the defending OIA champ, fell to 5-2, 4-2.

Kahuku's did its damage on the ground (382 yards, four touchdowns) and through the air (206 yards, two TDs). The Red Raiders even got a 21-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by offensive lineman Ernest Reid.

Defensively, Kahuku held the Knights to minus-36 yards rushing,

"They're very physical and have got a lot of weapons, and they just took it to us," Knights coach Nelson Maeda said. "Everything we tried was to no avail. I said before that (Kahuku) is a team on a mission to win the OIA again, and by the looks of tonight, they're right on track."

The Red Raiders' Hyrum Moors led all rushers with 159 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries, and Dustin Huddy added 114 yards and one touchdown on 13 rushes. Huddy also caught a 10-yard touchdown pass. Kahuku quarterback Waika Carvalho completed 10 of 13 passes for 203 yards and two TDs.

The Red Raiders took a 14-0 first quarter lead on touchdown runs by Moors and Huddy, but Castle cut it to 14-7 on a 4-yard TD pass from Bryce Kalauoka'aea to Ikaika Ho.

Kahuku, however, then scored two more touchdowns to take a 26-7 halftime lead and stretched it to 47-7 by the end of the third quarter.
