ISLE FILE
UH volleyball appeal extended to Oct. 24

Advertiser Staff

The University of Hawai'i was granted additional time to appeal an NCAA ruling stripping the school's men's volleyball team of its 2002 national championship.

On Sept. 5, the NCAA announced it found UH had committed a secondary violation when it used a player with professional experience during the 2002 NCAA final four. NCAA rules require an appeal to be filed within 30 days of the ruling.

When UH learned the NCAA Committee on Infractions, which reviews appeals, would not hear the case during this weekend's meetings, an extension was filed. The NCAA extended UH's deadline to Oct. 24.

Ching benefit: A fund-raising concert to help former UH volleyball player Tony Ching is scheduled for Nov. 8 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The money raised will help offset Ching's medical costs after he was injured in a moped accident last May.

The fund-raiser begins with an intrasquad scrimmage by the men's volleyball team at 7 p.m. The concert, featuring Sean Na'auao, Natural Vibrations, Next Generation and others, will begin at 9 p.m.

Tickets, which go on sale Monday, are $10 general admission and $3 for UH students, and are available at the Stan Sheriff Center box office, or by phone at 944-2346, or on the Internet at www.etickethawaii.com.
