North Shore challenges your appetite

By Wanda A. Adams
Advertiser Travel Editor

The problem is not where to eat as you travel along the North Shore, it's how often you can eat.

Here's a selection:

  • 21 Degrees North at Turtle Bay Resort in Kahuku is the one place worth dressing up for on the North Shore. Both the East-West fusion food and the tiered room from which every table has an ocean view are memorable experiences. 59-071 Kamehameha Highway, 293-8811.
  • Ted's Bakery, the source of all that is cream pie, occupies a small factory and storefront in the unlikely location of Sunset Beach. Open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.; stop by for morning pastries or to pick up a pie to take back to your vacation rental. Sandwiches, too. 59-024 Kamehameha Highway, 638-8207.
  • Haleiwa Joe's Seafood Grill, this year's North Shore 'Ilima Award winner, offers a covered outdoor lanai, friendly waiters, seafood, ribs and steaks and souvenir glasses if you get a tropical drink. Open daily. 66-011 Kamehameha Highway, Hale'iwa, 637 8005.
  • Shave ice (of course). On Kamehameha in Hale'iwa Town, take your pick of Miura's (66-057), Matsumoto's (66-087) or Aoki's (66-117). Argue the fine points while you wait in line.
  • Coffee Gallery is a source of fresh-roasted, locally grown coffee, gossip, Internet access, healthful but delicious pastries and sandwiches. North Shore Marketplace, 66-250 Kamehameha Highway, 637-5571.
  • North Shore Country Okazu & Bento is a four-table storefront in Haleiwa Shopping Center offering exceptional chicken (fried, shoyu), plate lunches and saimin. Open 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. (to 6 p.m. on Fridays); closed Sundays, Mondays. 66-197-C Kamehameha Highway, 637-0055.
  • Kua 'Aina Sandwich Shop. Even though there's one townside now, it's just not right to go to Hale'iwa without stopping for big, juicy hamburgers and those sinful fries. Open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. 66-214 Kamehameha Highway, 637-6067.
  • Cafe Hale'iwa is where surfers and other locals gather for big, inexpensive breakfasts and lunches; they close at 2 each day. 66-460 Kamehameha Highway, 637-5516.
