Farrington, Kailua play to 13-all tie

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Farrington High School senior Matt Bell's 29-yard field goal attempt fell just short on the game's final play last night, preserving a 13-13 tie with Kailua at muddy Roosevelt Stadium.

Kailua, ranked No. 5 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, is 5-1-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association.

Farrington is 3-3-1, 3-2-1.

Kailua tied the score at 13-13 on Mike Sakaba's extra point with 46 seconds remaining in the game, after Bronson Kamaka's 7-yard touchdown pass from Kelroy Kohatsu. Both teams are among five in the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division fighting for four league playoff spots.

"We gotta get into the playoffs, that's the main thing," Kailua coach Darren Johnson said. "We thought about (going for the two-point conversion), but we decided we'll do the smart thing and the right thing."

Farrington took the ensuing kickoff and drove to the Surfriders' 24-yard line in five plays, setting up Bell's 41-yard field-goal attempt with 0:01 on the clock. The attempt was wide and well short, but Kailua was flagged for roughing the kicker and the ball moved to the 12 for another attempt by Bell.

The kick appeared to be on line but sank a few feet below the crossbar.
