Advertiser Staff

Kaua'i's Andy Irons moved another step closer to his second consecutive world championship with a victory in the Quiksilver Pro France yesterday.

Irons defeated Australian Phil MacDonald in the one-on-one final, 18.06-13.73, to win the $30,000 first prize. It was Irons' fourth victory in eight contests this year.

Irons took control of the final heat early. A long barrel ride six minutes into the heat received a near-perfect score of 9.43, giving him a lead he would never relinquish.

Irons, who won his first world championship last year, increased his lead on the 2003 World Championship Tour. Through eight of 12 events, Irons has 6,960 points. Kelly Slater of Florida is second with 6,228.
