THE LEFT LANE
South Park goes gay

Advertiser Staff and News Services

"South Park," the Comedy Central network's top-rated show, is picking up on the "metrosexual" craze. As Comedy Central puts it in a press release, "Everyone is suddenly hot to be gay!" In a current episode, Cartman, Stan, Kyle and Kenny enter a fierce competition to see who can be the gayest, while Mr. Garrison responds with, "If straight people are gonna steal our culture, then us REAL gays are just gonna have to step it up a notch!"

The program airs at various dates and times throughout the week; check TV listings for details. Trey Parker and Matt Stone are co-creators and executive producers of the Emmy-nominated program.

Secrets of the shells

Pam Dow of Forever Kaua'i is again bringing Ni'ihau shell lei experts to O'ahu for a week of events including lei repair, lei sales and lei appraisals at Native Books/Na Mea Hawai'i at Ward Warehouse. But this time, Dow is also bringing a never-before-seen collection of privately-owned shell lei.

Each lei has an "intimate, private story," Dow said — "what motivated the leimaker in his or her creative process."

A Hawaiian language pupu reception is set for 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the store. The collection will be on display during store hours through Sunday. Appraisor Lena Mendonca will do on-site appraisals by appointment 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday; call (808) 337-2888 for an appointment.

"Starter sets" — a Ni'ihau shell choker and a book on the jewelry — will be sold for $150.

Batting 100

The World Series, when baseball dynasties reign and heroes are born, is 100 years old this year. To mark the milestone, Major League Baseball and Q Video have released "Fall Classic: 100 Years of the World Series," narrated by Bob Costas.

"Fall Classic" ($14.95) recaps pinnacle moments from each era of the World

Series as seen through the eyes of those who were there. A special edition ($19.95) has two hours of bonus footage.

And who else but the New York Yankees would come up with their own centennial special DVD, "100 Years of the New York Yankees: Pinstripes, Power & Pride," a five-hour tour of glory-filled years of Yankee , magic, mystique and tragedy in the sport's most hallowed ground, Yankee Stadium (from Hart Sharp Video, $24.99)?
