OIA East, West football titles clinched

By Stacy Kaneshiro
Advertiser Staff Writer

Kahuku and Mililani clinched O'ahu Interscholastic Association East and West titles, respectively, over the weekend and the top seeds for the Red Conference tournament, which starts Oct. 24.

The Red Raiders (6-0), ranked No. 2 in The Advertiser Top 10, clinched the East title with a 47-15 win against No. 4 Castle Friday combined with No. 5 Kailua's 13-13 tie with Farrington Saturday night.

The Trojans (6-0) won their first West title with a 27-20 win against Wai'anae Friday. Mililani's only other title was the 1997 Blue, which it shared with Nanakuli.

The top four teams from the East and top four from the West advance to the eight-team OIA Red tournament; the final four advance to the Division I state tournament.

This is what the other contenders face entering the final regular-season weekend for the OIA Red.

East

Friday

Kahuku at Kailua
Farrington vs. Kaimuki at Kaiser

Saturday

Castle vs. McKinley at Roosevelt

  • Kahuku (6-0) clinched division title and East No. 1, regardless of how it does against Kailua.
  • Kailua (4-1-1) has secured a playoff berth regardless of the outcome against Kahuku. Surfriders need a win for seeding purposes.
  • Castle (4-2) earns playoff berth by beating McKinley or if Farrington loses. Loss to Mililani in a game in which a number of players were serving a suspension from ejections from last year's state championship game might be the difference.
  • Farrington (3-2-1) earns playoff berth by beating Kaimuki or if McKinley loses.
  • McKinley (3-3) earns playoff berth by beating Castle. Both would be 4-3, but Tigers advance by head-to-head tiebreaker.

West

Friday

Mililani at Leilehua
Wai'anae at Campbell
Pearl City vs. Waipahu at Mililani
Nanakuli—bye

  • Mililani (6-0) owns division title and West No. 1 seed regardless of how it fares against Leilehua.
  • Pearl City (4-2) has playoff berth regardless of how it does against Waipahu. A win gives the Chargers the West No. 2 seed.
  • Nanakuli (4-3) has bye. Needs either Leilehua, Wai'anae or Pearl City to lose. The Golden Hawks can win a berth in a four-way tie (if Pearl City, Nanakuli, Leilehua and Wai'anae finish 4-3) by tiebreakers. But if there is a three-way tie among Nanakuli, Leilehua and Wai'anae (if all are 4-3), the Golden Hawks lose the record against common opponents tiebreaker.
  • Wai'anae (3-3) needs to beat Campbell, and Leilehua to lose to earn a berth.
  • Leilehua (3-3) needs to beat Mililani, and Pearl City to win to earn a berth. If Wai'anae and Leilehua finish with identical records for the fourth berth, the Mules win by head-to-head tiebreaker.

In the OIA White, where the top four teams advance to a tournament, Kapolei (6-0), 'Aiea (5-1) and Radford (5-1) have clinched berths. The only question is seeding.

The top two teams from the tournament advance to the Division II state tournament.

White

Friday

Kapolei at Radford
'Aiea at Moanalua

Saturday

Kaiser vs. Kalaheo at Kailua

  • Kapolei (6-0) clinched playoff berth. Can win White title outright and White No. 1 seed with win against Radford.
  • 'Aiea (5-1) clinched playoff berth. Can clinch No. 2 seed with win against Moanalua.
  • Radford (5-1) clinched playoff berth. Can clinch either a two- or three-way tie for White title with win against Kapolei.

If Radford wins and 'Aiea loses, Rams would earn No. 1 seed, but share title with Kapolei.

If Radford and 'Aiea win, there will be a three-way tie with all three teams at 6-1. Since each beat one but not the other, a coin toss determines seeding.

  • Kaiser and Kalaheo. The winner of this game clinches the fourth berth.
