THE LEFT LANE
Goblins for glasses

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Candy is not the only goal for trick-or-treaters this Halloween. Thousands of little ghosts and goblins all over America are volunteering for "Sight Night," a program to collect used eyeglasses to be refurbished, recycled and delivered to people in need in developing countries around the world.

Scouts and community organizations are invited to take part in the program created by LensCrafters and Lions Club International. Since Sight Night's inception in 1999, volunteers have collected more than 250,000 pairs of glasses for the needy.

To get involved, visit the Web site www.sightnight.org and request a collection kit.

Fruit with a straw

Want a fruity frozen drink? Here's what to do:

Whenever possible, use fresh fruit; it's better than frozen or canned. Use fruits that are softer, but never bruised — they add a peculiar taste to drinks. Add liquids to the blender first and ice last — otherwise, your machine is apt to stall. Don't over-blend fruit.

Once you've made them, serve immediately. Blended cocktails don't improve with age.

No alcohol is necessary. Take out 1 ounce of spirits and you can save nearly 100 calories.

Make more than you need — your guests will thank you.

Johnny Cash on DVD

There's a new DVD out with concert footage of the late, great country-rock icon Johnny Cash. "Johnny Cash, a Concert: Behind Prison Walls" (Eagle Rock, $20.98) was filmed in 1976 with Cash performing inside the Tennessee State Penitentiary at Nashville, accompanied by Linda Ronstadt and Roy Clark.
