'Abusive' injury in baby's autopsy

A 7-week-old boy allegedly slain by his father died of "abusive head trauma," an autopsy found, according to court documents released yesterday.

The injuries suffered by the baby were not accidental, the autopsy said.

Derrick S. Smith, 33, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder Saturday, two days after the baby, identified as Kelby Bridenstein, was found unresponsive at a Salt Lake apartment, police said.

Smith told investigators that he was carrying Kelby, but the child slipped from his arms and hit his face on the tile floor, according to court documents.

Body found off Magic Island

The body of a 50-year-old Kapi'olani-area woman was found floating early yesterday in waters off Magic Island.

The woman, who was pronounced dead at Straub Clinic & Hospital, had been reported missing at 4 a.m. by her husband, said Mary Aragones of the Honolulu Police Department's missing persons detail.

The body was discovered at 6:30 a.m. There is no evidence of foul play, said Detective Cliff Rubio.
