LEEWARD O'AHU

Homeless camp to be discussed

The Wai'anae Community Area Responsibility group will hold a public meeting tomorrow night to discuss a proposal for a temporary homeless transitional campsite at an unimproved section of Wai'anae Regional Park.

The campsite would be a place for homeless people to receive temporary shelter and counseling from job, medical and social service providers while they prepare to make the transition to permanent housing.

The meeting will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wai'anae Multipurpose Building, behind the public library at 85-625 Farrington Highway. For more information, call Tom Caldwell at 479-8501.

Dangers noted at Maui harbor

An advisory committee on Maui said it will tell Gov. Linda Lingle that Ma'alaea Harbor needs emergency repairs to electrical fixtures and walkways.

Kalei Sombelon, a member of the governor's Maui Advisory Committee, said the situation "is a lawsuit waiting to happen." Committee chairwoman Madge Schaefer said she found open junction boxes with exposed wires and some of the wiring grounded to nearby handrails.
