THE LEFT LANE
Could be a contender

Advertiser Staff and News Services

That's lei-adorned model Jann Kaiulani Kimi Michishima on the official poster of the Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival, wearing high heels and boxing gloves.

Island artist Rich Richardson designed the poster. "I'm hoping the image challenges the viewer to distill the ambiguities into an image of empowerment," Richardson said.

Posters are $5 unsigned, $10 signed, at the HIFF box office at Signature Dole Cannery Theatre, starting Tuesday. The 23rd annual film festival runs Oct. 20-Nov. 9 ; program guides will be available at Blockbuster Video outlets. Details: www.hiff.org or 528-4433.

Battle of the bards

ALMARIO
Here's a form of rhetoric not heard often in the Islands: Balagtasan — a traditional Filipino poetic debate performed in extemporaneous rhyme and verse — will be presented at the Philippine Consulate at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Visiting Tagalog poet laureates Virgilio Almario, Teo T. Antonio and Michael Coroza will debate whether Filipinos should work abroad; English translations will be projected on a screen.

Hear panel discussions and lectures noon-2 p.m. today at the UH Center of Philippine Studies, 2-4 p.m. tomorrow at the Honolulu Academy of Arts and 10-11 a.m. Friday at Leeward Community College. For details about the free events, call 956-6970 or 543-7779.

And the kitchen think

The 16th annual Great Kitchen & Bath Tour runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Tour homeowners will welcome visitors into their recently built or remodeled homes in Mililani, Waikele, Kane'ohe, Manoa, Wai'alae, Kahala and Hawai'i Kai.

Visitors can check out a mix of traditional styles and high-tech appliances, and meet designers and manufacturers. Tickets, $10, are tax-deductible and benefit Honolulu Habitat for Humanity. Get tickets and maps at Gentry Pacific Design Center and HomeStreet Bank, or call 306-3718.

Rimes cancels show

RIMES
She can't fight the moonlight — or sluggish ticket sales. Country pop thrush LeAnn Rimes and Florida-based promoter Jack Utsick Presents have cancelled Rimes' scheduled Nov. 1 concert at the Blaisdell Arena. No official reason was given, but an online Ticketmaster search showed that good seats were still available days before cancellation, an indication of slow sales. Point-of-purchase refunds are being handled by the Blaisdell Center box office: 591-2211. For refunds on online and phone purchases via Ticketmaster, call (877) 750-4400.
