The fall cooking class series is under way at Lyon Arboretum. Upcoming classes include Brioche, Challah and Pumpkin Bread with baker Lavonne Tollerud (Saturday); High Tea with Betty Compton (Saturday), French Country Dishes with chef Ed Frady (Oct. 25), Soups with chef Goran Streng (Oct. 29), Perfect Holiday Cookies with pastry chef Abigail Langlas (Nov. 1), Delicious Food — All Island-Grown with chef John Armstrong (Nov. 5), Healthy Asian Dishes with Walter Rhee (Nov. 7), Knife Basics with Goran Streng (Nov. 8), Osso Bucco with the Swiss Inn's Martin Wyss (Nov. 12), Kabocha and Smoked Salmon with chef Russell Siu (Nov. 12), Turkey the Day After Indigo Style with chef Glenn Chu (Nov. 19) and Hot Pot with Walter Rhee (Nov. 29). New on Maui

The Westin Maui has opened the Colonnade Asian Noodle Cafe on its colonnade promenade, with views of waterfalls and koi ponds. Chef Bart Umidi has developed an eclectic pan-Asian menu. Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. nightly. Call (808) 667-2525.

Pick a pumpkin

Pumpkin picking begins at The Great Kapolei Pumpkin Patch at Aloun Farms this weekend, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 91-1440 Farrington Highway. From Honolulu, take the Ewa Beach exit off H-1, go makai on Fort Weaver Road, take exit 6A 'ewabound and watch for pumpkin signs.

Speaking of pumpkins, Gros Bonnet Culinary Academy is having a pumpkin-carving exhibit, displaying students' work, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 24 and 25 in their dining room, 1431 S. Beretania St. The $3 entrance fee will be donated to children's wards at hospitals (children under 12 free). Desserts, pastries and sweets will be on sale. Information: 944-2770. Free parking.

Save Oct. 26 for Family Sunday at Bishop Museum in celebration of "Chocolate," the new traveling exhibit opening this weekend. Family Sunday will include chocolate tastings, demonstrations and exhibits, as well as music and a special planetarium show. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; free admission for two persons with a Bank of Hawaii bank card, credit card, check or employee ID or Bishop Museum membership. Otherwise: $3; children under 4 free.
