Tonight's Must-See

"ER," 9 p.m., NBC. A bad night in the emergency room keeps getting worse. Pratt (Mekhi Phifer) tries his usual bravado with bad results. Weaver complains about the mistakes her staff is making and then makes one herself. Meanwhile, Abby's troubles keep building. She needs money and a boost. And she meets Kovac and his new girlfriend.

Of Note

"Basic Training: America's Proving Ground," 5, 9 p.m., History Channel. A documentary looks at the struggles of military recruits during basic training.

"Friends," 7 p.m., NBC. Monica and Chandler are anxious for a long-delayed getaway weekend, but Rachel says that must wait until after Emma's first birthday party. Things are delayed even more by the arrival of what seems to be a sexually explicit birthday cake. Joey is in charge of keeping everyone there until the new cake arrives.

"Threat Matrix," 7 p.m., ABC. Mo (Anthony Azizi) is an Egyptian American and a former CIA operative stationed in the Middle East. His old friend, a devout Muslim, is considered a bombing suspect. This leads Mo to question the relationship between government security tactics and individual rights.

"Will & Grace," 8 p.m., NBC. Will is trying to adjust to rooming with Grace's mom (Blythe Danner). Meanwhile, Jack is startled to find his performance in a play is being considered better than the work of a famous actor also in the play. That actor? The incomparable James Earl Jones.

"Coupling," 8:30 p.m., NBC. Here's the sort of moral dilemma people only worry about on TV shows. If the person who buys dinner is then treated to exceptionally good sex, is that a little like prostitution?

"Without a Trace," 9 p.m., CBS. A young violin star disappears. Officials wonder if this involves her father's past in Russia.
