Schnack third in half marathon

Hawai'i's Cynthia Schnack, 39, finished third overall among women and first in her age group in the 22nd annual Ichinoseki Half Marathon in Japan on Sept. 28.

Schnack's time was 1 hour, 24 minutes, 11 seconds. She competed in the 30-older age group.

Rani Tanimoto, 27, of Kealakekua, finished seventh overall and fourth in the 18-29 age group in 1:31:21.

GOLF

UH-Hilo finishes third: The University of Hawai'i-Hilo men's golf team finished third at the 12-team Chico State Subway Invitational Tuesday in Chico, Calif.

Host Chico State won with an 8-under 856. UH-Hilo shot 877.

UH-Hilo's Tysen Shinaut shot a 2-over-par 218 (70-75-73) to finish in a tie for 10th. Other UH-Hilo golfers were: Nick Mason (tie 13th, 219), Garrett Okamura (tie 13th, 219), Colin Gilliam (20th, 222) and Kevin Shimomura (tie 49th, 231).

Chico State's J.J. Jakovac won with an 8-under 208.
