Panel to discuss historical interpretations

A panel discussion titled "Who Owns the Past?" about how interpretations of history affect people today will begin at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the 'Iolani Palace Kana'inaÊBuilding.

The event is sponsored by the College of International Studies at Hawai'i Pacific University.

Panelists are Leilani Basham, University of Hawai'i political science doctoral candidate; Noelle M.K.Y. Kahanu, Bishop Museum project manager; and Christopher Fung, HPU anthropology professor. Moderator is Lahela Perry, UH anthropology doctoral candidate.

The event is the first in a series of panel discussions on a historical theme that also will examine cultural heritage management, the treatment of human remains, and the roles of history, anthropology and the entertainment industry and tourism in promoting certain views of the past.
