Radford's Sunny Belcher keeps his focus reaching for this pass. Defending is Kapolei's Carrington Luttrell. The pass fell incomplete.
In only its second year of varsity play, four-year-old Kapolei High captured the O'ahu Interscholastic Association White championship last night with a 38-21 win against Radford at the Rams' John Velasco Stadium.

The Hurricanes, ranked eighth in The Advertiser Top 10, scored 17 third-quarter points to snap a 14-all deadlock at the half to finish the regular season 7-0 (8-0 overall) and gain the top seed of the OIA White tournament, which starts Nov. 1. Kapolei will play the the fourth-seed, or the winner of tonight's Kaiser-Kalaheo game at Kailua.

"It's great," said junior John Medeiros, half of the quarterback tandem that led the Hurricanes. "I believed we could (win the title at the season's outset) because we had a lot of potential."

The Rams (5-2, 5-3) are the third seed and 'Aiea is the second seed. The two will play in the White tournament first-round game on Nov. 1.

"The magnitude of what we've done hasn't sunk in yet," said Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez, who nurtured this team from the start four years ago. "If you think about it, I don't know of any team in the history of football, second year of varsity football they go undefeated and win the conference. People might scoff at that and say we're in the White, but you still have to go out and win every game. I'm so proud of my staff and the players. It's amazing what they've done."

It wasn't an easy clincher for the Hurricanes, who played against their two closest contenders in the last two games of the season. They beat 'Aiea, 44-24, last week to hand Na Ali'i their first loss, and then beat the Rams, who entered last night's contest one game back of Kapolei.

"We knew each game was going to be tougher than the last," Hernandez said. "We knew that (Radford) gave up only 58 points (to opponents), tops in the OIA White this year. Their defense was really tough."

And the Rams gave the Hurricanes a run early, taking the lead twice in the first half, only to watch the Hurricanes even the game both times.

The Rams scored on their opening drive, moving 64 yards on eight plays with quarterback Dennis Medina hitting Sunny Belcher with a 5-yard TD pass.

The Hurricanes tied the game two series later, when John Medeiros connected with Charles Recamara with a 7-yard TD pass to make it 7-7

The Rams got a break early in the second quarter when Jordan Rellin recovered a muffed punt at the Kapolei 23. Four plays later, Jason Opetaia scored on a 5-yard run to give the Rams a 14-7 lead.

The Hurricanes tied the game at 14 when Medeiros scrambled on third-and-10 for an 11-yard TD run with 11 seconds left in the half.

A fumble by Radford early in the third quarter set up Kapolei's next TD, a 33-yard run by running back Gilbert Brown that made it 21-14.

An interception by E.B. Hernandez off Dennis Medina set up Kerisiano Tuaniga's 35-yard field goal to make it 24-14.

The Rams answered when Medina hit Belcher with a 65-yard TD pass to pull the Rams to 24-21.

But Kapolei's Brandon Pieper returned the ensuing kickoff 50 yards to the Rams' 35, where Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada scored on a 35-yard run on an option keeper to make it 31-21.

Kaheaku-Enhada, the other half of the QB tandem, scored on a 17-yard run in the fourth quarter to cap the Hurricanes' scoring.

"Again, our two-headed monster at quarterback did the job," Hernandez said. "Kaipo-Noa and John produced when they had to."
