BYUH sweeps past Chaminade in volleyball

Advertiser Staff

Silvia Oliveira pounded a match-high 16 kills and Chun Yi Lin added 15 as 13th-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i overpowered host Chaminade 30-23, 30-11, 30-21 in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match last night.

An estimated crowd of 300 at McCabe Gym watched the Seasiders (13-2 overall, 6-0 PacWest) win their 12th straight match and take a half-match conference lead over second-place Hawai'i Pacific (13-2, 5-0). The Silverswords (8-7, 3-2) dropped their third consecutive match.

Chaminade led 19-16 in Game 1, but BYUH went on a 5-0 run to seize the momentum. Chaminade closed to 23-22, but couldn't overtake BYUH.

"We were kind of slow in getting started," BYUH coach Wilfred Navalta said. "Our offense was running real smooth and well (in Game 1), but our blocking and defense needed to come around. Chaminade played well ... they were giving us problems with our defense. Once we got set on our defense, the match came through."

Kahala Kabalis led Chaminade with 11 kills.

SWIMMING

• Bloch leads UH: University of Hawai'i swimmer Cheyne Bloch won three events to lead the men to a 163-132 win over Arizona State in a dual meet yesterday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

The women lost to Arizona State, 190-110.

Bloch won the 100-yard breaststroke in 55.08 seconds, the 200 breaststroke in 2:00.05 and the 200 individual medley in 1:50.38. His 100 breaststroke time was a NCAA "B" standard, a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA meet.

TENNIS

• UH's Sceats advances: University of Hawai'i's men's tennis player Ryan Sceats defeated Scott Kennel from the University of Portland, 6-2, 6-4, to move on to the round of 32 in the ITA Fall Regional Tournament in Eugene, Ore.

Hawai'i's Jarrod Diepraam lost to James Pade of Stanford, 6-2, 6-0.

In doubles play, Sceats and Diepraam lost to Tyler Browne and Dean Wallace out of the University of California, 8-4.
