HONOLULU

Moped driver injured in crash

A 26-year-old moped driver was in critical condition last night at The Queen's Medical Center.

Police said the man was westbound on Dillingham Boulevard near Waiakamilo Road when he was struck by an SUV heading eastbound and making a left turn into Waiakamilo Plaza Shopping Center.

Neither speed or alcohol were thought to be factors. The moped driver was wearing a helmet.

The driver of the SUV was not injured.


19,800 took up summer reading

More than 19,800 children and teenagers participated in summer reading programs at state libraries, reading more than 265,500 books.

Libraries in Mililani and McCully-Mo'ili'ili had the highest number of participants in the children's reading program on O'ahu, while libraries in Hilo, Hawai'i; Wailuku, Maui; and Lihu'e, Kaua'i, had the most participants on the Neighbor Islands.

Among young adults, the library at 'Ewa Beach had the most participants on O'ahu, while libraries in Hilo; Makawao, Maui; and Lihu'e had the highest numbers on the Neighbor Islands.

Library officials said the numbers were strong despite branches being open 194 hours less per week compared with last summer.


WWII film to be shown Tuesday

"An Untold Triumph," the documentary about World War II Filipino-American regiments, will be screened free in a community gathering set for 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Farrington High School auditorium.

A program preceding the screening will include a posthumous honor for Juan Dionisio, one of the regimental founders, to be presented to his son, Juan Dionisio Jr.

The documentary will be introduced by Herbert Wolff, who was a private during the war and was part of the raid rescuing American prisoners from the infamous Bataan March in the Philippines.

Woman receives two-week retreat

Donna Wong, executive director for Hawai'i's Thousand Friends, has received a Windcall Residency Program award that entitles her to a two-week retreat on a 320-acre working ranch in Montana.

The program was established in 1989 and offers experienced social-change organizers and activists a chance to reflect and rejuvenate at no cost. Wong, who is also a Kailua Neighborhood Board member, is the first person chosen from Hawai'i.


Shelter hearing set for Tuesday

The city will hold a public hearing for a proposed Kane'ohe group shelter facility at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the City Hall Annex, 550 S. King St., Human Resources Conference Room. Parents and Children Together is proposing to open an abuse shelter and is seeking a conditional-use permit.

Spaces open at new preschool

Keonepoko Pre Plus, a new preschool, will open tomorrow in Pahoa on the Big Island.
