Viloria camp unhappy

BRIAN VILORIA

Waipahu's Brian Viloria is learning that professional boxing is as much about what happens outside the ring as in it.

Viloria has not fought since July 22, in part because of a squabble between his management team and DiBella Entertainment, which is his promotion/matchmaking company.

"DiBella has not met all of the terms of Brian's exclusive contract," said Gary Gittelsohn, Viloria's manager. "If it can be worked out, we're willing to work with them. If not, we will start looking in another direction."

Lou DiBella, owner of Dibella Entertainment, is one of boxing's most recognized matchmakers. Viloria signed a four-year contract with DiBella Entertainment upon turning professional in 2001.

DiBella is affiliated with HBO, and Gittelsohn said Viloria has yet to appear on the cable network, despite guarantees in his contract.

Viloria, who represented the United States at the 2000 Olympics, is 13-0 as a professional with eight knockouts. He is the North American Boxing Federation (NABF) flyweight champion and the World Boxing Council (WBC) youth world champion.

Viloria, who is the No. 4-ranked flyweight in the world by the WBC, knocked out Luis Doria in the first round in his last bout.

"(DiBella) has not been able to deliver a fight for Brian because they claim the marketplace is very difficult," Gittelsohn said.

According to Gittelsohn, Viloria is scheduled to fight on Nov. 21, but that is tentative because of the conflicts with DiBella.

"Brian was guaranteed certain annual sums of money, and that has fallen substantially short," Gittelsohn said. "The big money is tied to the big fights, so that's what Brian is waiting on."

Gittelsohn is more frustrated because Viloria's Olympic teammates Jermain Taylor and Jose Navarro have received headline bouts on HBO from DiBella Entertainment.

"Brian has fulfilled his obligations in the ring," Gittelsohn said. "We expect DiBella will return the favor."

DiBella could not be reached for comment.
