A 58-year-old woman died after being struck by a van while crossing Kalihi Street between Democrat and Kahai streets at 5:50 a.m. today.

She was pronounced dead at The Queen’s Medical Center.

Kalihi Street was closed between Democrat and Kahai streets for about three hours as a result of the accident. It was reopened at 9:03 a.m.

The medical examiner’s office identified the woman as Miriama Leauti of Kalihi.

Leauti is the 12th pedestrian to be killed on O'ahu roadways this year.

There have been a total of 67 traffic deaths so far this year, 24 percent more than the 54 traffic fatalities recorded during the same time period last year.

Nine traffic deaths have occurred since Oct. 4.

According to preliminary police reports, the van in today’s accident was attempting to overtake a car when it struck Leauti, who was not in a crosswalk.

Police said the van was not speeding.
