Man fatally shot on Big Island

Big Island police are conducting a homicide investigation in connection with a shooting last night at Hawaiian Acres subdivision in Puna that left a 62-year-old man dead and a woman, 57, in critical condition.

Capt. Sam Thomas of the Criminal Investigation Division said police are looking for a 33-year-old man for questioning.

The shooting was reported at 8:26 p.m. The man was pronounced dead at the scene and the woman was taken to Hilo Medical Center and later to The Queen’s Medical Center.

3 charged in assault, robbery

Three men were charged yesterday in connection with a baseball-bat beating of a man Friday. The man’s car also was stolen.

Eddieson Reyes, 19, and Reynante Reyes, 22, were charged with first-degree robbery. In addition, Eddieson Reyes is charged with three counts of first-degree criminal property damage while Reynante Reyes is charged with auto theft and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.

A third man — 20-year-old JonJon Reyes — is charged with second-degree assault.

The three men, who reside at the same address, are being held in lieu of $100,000 bail each.

They are accused of robbing a 22-year-old man after he made a withdrawal from an automatic teller machine at American Savings Bank’s Kalihi branch at 1851 N. King St. The man told police he was trying to leave the parking lot but the suspects blocked his way with their vehicle. The three men allegedly hit the victim and his vehicle with a baseball bat. The three men then allegedly took the damaged vehicle, which was later recovered by police.

Kalihi man faces robbery charges

A 32-year-old Kalihi man was charged yesterday with robbing the McDonald’s restaurant in Wahiawa early Saturday. Ate Nakala Soon-Whi of a Pala Street address was arrested at 1 a.m. Saturday near 100 N. Kamehameha Highway about 30 minutes after the robbery at 114 S. Kamehameha Highway was reported.

Soon-Whi is charged with second-degree robbery. His bail is $20,000.

Arrest made in Kalihi shooting

Police arrested a 26-year-old man last night in connection with an attack in Kalihi early Saturday that resulted in one man being shot in the stomach. The shooting victim, 19, was in critical condition today at The Queen’s Medical Center, according to police.

The man arrested at a Winant Street address at 11:10 p.m. was booked on two counts of first-degree attempted murder, two counts of second-degree attempted murder and two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening. Police said he and another man, who is still at large, were carrying a gun and knife when they confronted two men, ages 19 and 26, at 2:30 a.m. Saturday on Kaiwi'ula Street.

The 26-year-old victim said he fought with the man with the knife, who is the suspect in custody. No one was injured in that confrontation.

The suspects fled in a car that was later recovered by police.
