LEEWARD

ATV rider hurt at beach

A man who was injured while riding an all-terrain, quad vehicle along the Leeward Coast yesterday was airlifted by military helicopter to The Queen's Medical Center.

The man was hurt before 4 p.m. at Pray for Sex Beach. Officials were not sure how he was hurt or the extent of his injuries.


Wai'anae school fire investigated

Officials are investigating a small fire that occurred on the grounds of Wai'anae Elementary School last night.

The fire was between two portable classrooms, said HFD Capt. Emmit Kane. He estimated damage at $10,000. The fire was reported at 7:16 p.m. and was under control by 7:29 p.m. Kane said the cause was not known.

Ahupua'a group to hold meeting

Creating the Sustainable Community will be the topic of a symposium Nov. 1 at Windward Community College's Hale 'Akoakoa.

Group to share library plans

The Friends of Kailua Library will unveil plans to renovate the Kailua library courtyard at a public meeting at 6 p.m. tomorrow at the library. Architect Paul Sheffield will present the $70,000 project.

Fishery council meets this week

The Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council will meet this week to discuss issues concerning Hawai'i's longline fishing industry, including ways to prevent harm to sea turtles.

The meetings run today through Wednesday at the Pagoda Hotel.

The Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council is working on long-term management issues for longline fishing and at its last meeting adopted emergency, interim rules.

If approved by the National Marine Fisheries Service, the rules can be in place for only 360 days.
