Gal pals create floral barrettes

By Paula Rath

Sometimes the most fun fashion accessories evolve by accident. That's the case with the whimsical faux-leather barrettes by Rona Marie Awber and Lan Chung, both 29, who are friends, roommates and co-owners of a little home-based company called Fighting Eel.

"The barrettes started as party favors for my birthday," Awber explained. "I wore them in New York and was stopped on the street by girls who wanted to buy them right off me. I guess they see them as a little bit of Hawai'i." She sold them all.

" I think they're fresh and hip and can be worn by women of so many ages," said Lo Kaimuloa, owner of Riches Kahala. "Put your hair up in a French twist and add three of them i each in a different color i up the side of the twist for a great look." They also add a feminine touch to a short haircut.

The barrettes come in six colors and sell for $14 exclusively at Riches Kahala.
