Salvation Army gives kids gifts

The Salvation Army is accepting applications from families who will need help giving their children gifts this holiday season.

Applications will be accepted through Nov. 21 at three Salvation Army locations on O'ahu:

  • Kauluwela Mission Corps, 296 N. Vineyard Blvd., 10 to11:30 a.m. and 2 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Call 521-6551.
  • Kane'ohe Corps., 45-175 Waikalua Road, 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Call 235-1408.
  • Leeward Corps, 98-612 Moanalua Loop, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Call 487-1636.

Applicants must present photo identification for themselves and their children, verify income and have proof of address.


Food featured at Japan festival

Aki Matsuri, Japan's traditional fall festival celebrating the summer harvest, will feature a small country market and a range of Japanese cuisine between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii. Admission is free.

O'ahu Japanese restaurants will prepare foods for sale, and shoppers at the free event may purchase organic produce and fresh flowers at the market.

Entertainment will include taiko drumming and other musical and dance performances. Visitors can participate in cultural activities such as calligraphy and making ikebana flower arrangements.

Emmie Shigezawa will autograph copies of her recent book "Pake Patch," which looks back at the lives of island Japanese families during the World War II years.

EAST HONOLULU

Teens charged in drug raid

Police yesterday raided an off-campus hangout behind Kaiser High School at 7:45 a.m. and arrested three boys on suspicion of smoking and dealing marijuana.

Two of the boys are 14 years old; the third is 15. All are freshmen at Kaiser High, said Narcotics/Vice Capt. Kevin Lima.

One of the 14-year-olds was booked as a juvenile for second-degree promotion of a detrimental drug; the other two for third-degree promotion of a detrimental drug.

Police made the arrests at Kekupua and Pakala streets, where agricultural lots meet a residential neighborhood behind Kaiser High. About 30 students were congregated there at the time of the arrests.

Church provides family dinners

New Hope Windward Christian Fellowship provides free hot meats to families in need on the first Friday of each month.

The next dinner will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 7 at Queen Lili'uokalani Children's Center, 46-316 Ha'iku Road, Kane'ohe.
