Taft College volleyball gets lift from Hawai'i

Seven players from Hawai'i high schools are leading the way for the Taft College (Calif.) women's volleyball team, which is 8-0 in Central Valley Conference play and 9-1 overall.
The Cougars are ranked 19th in the state, eighth in Northern California.
The players are:
Sophomore outside hitter Jamie Tsubaki (Kaimuki High) is third on the team with 2.77 kills per game (177 kills). She has 188 digs, averaging 2.94 digs per game.
Sophomore libero Burgandi Borges (Roosevelt High) leads the team with 3.72 digs per game (238 digs).
Freshman setter Lehua Yap (Nanakuli High) leads the team with 438 assists, 6.84 assists per game.
Freshman outside hitter/middle blocker Janice Fonoti (Farrington High) is second on the team with 3.13 kills per game (197 kills), and leads the team with .89 blocks per game.
Freshman outside hitter/middle blocker Kristelle Marfil (Farrington High) is fourth on the team with 1.81 kills per game (116 kills), and second on the team with .77 blocks per game.

Head coach Kanoe Bandy and her sister, assistant coach Kealii Pearl, have family from Hawai'i.

Menlo sophomore setter Kari Shimomura (McKinley, of Honolulu) was named the California Pacific Conference setter of the week. She had 53 assists, 23 digs, 4 blocks and 4 aces in two matches.
Soccer
Brown freshman goalkeeper David Semenza (Punahou '03, of Honolulu) started the first game of his career on Oct. 14 against Providence. Semenza had five saves, allowing both goals in a 2-2 tie.
Golf
Loyola Marymount's Chaz Inouye (St. Anthony '02, of Wailuku) finished in a tie for 15th at the Bill Cullum Countrywide Intercollegiate tournament yesterday. He shot 70-70-77217.
