Kaiser football team might have to forfeit

A Kaiser High official confirmed Thursday that the school has reported to the Oahu Interscholastic Association’s executive council a possible rules violation that might lead to a forfeit of a game that could cost the school’s White Conference football playoff berth.

Athletic director Ricky Shimokawa said Thursday morning that the school discovered yesterday that it used an ineligible player in Saturday’s win against Kalaheo. Both teams entered the final regular season week with 3-3 records with the winner gaining the fourth and final White playoff berth. Kaiser beat Kalaheo, 33-8.

The executive council, made up of a principal of each of the four school districts and OIA president Patricia Pedersen, is the only body in the OIA that can declare forfeitures. It is not known when the council will deliver its verdict.

If the forfeiture is declared, it is likely Kalaheo would replace Kaiser in the four-team OIA White tournament, which starts Nov. 1. Kaiser or Kalaheo is scheduled to play top-seeded Kapolei, while 'Aiea and Radford meet in the other semifinal. Game sites are to be determined.

If there is a forfeiture, it would be the third in the OIA this season. Last week, Castle and Leilehua forfeited victories from earlier in the season for each using an ineligible player. Both teams finished fifth in their respective divisions. The top four East and top four West teams got playoff berths.
